Excerpt from The American College A Criticism
This book is based on an educational experience of almost twenty years, in the course Of which I prepared many pupils for college; I tried also to ob serve their development during and after their college careers. Subse quently I spent two years as graduate student at two different American uni versities, and something above a year in England and Germany, where I eu joyed opportunities for observation. I have, moreover, frequently compared notes with teachers in secondary schools, colleges, universities and pro fessional schools, whose experience has been in some respects fuller and more.

This book, written more than 100 years ago, documents a long list of shortcomings of American college education that sound incredibly familiar. It is both startling and depressing to discover how many of the problems inherent in higher education today are generations old. If anything, things have gotten worse, not better. Grade inflation and an incoherent, consumer driven curriculum, problems that Flexner describes vividly, have become even more deeply entrenched. As Flexner makes clear, there are solutions to these problems, but they require toughness, persistence, and vision to implement. Since higher education has come to be dominated by state financed mega-campuses such solutions seem even more unlikely. No faculty or administration that attempted to implement them would long survive the political turmoil they would create, and private colleges, already under pressure financially from publicly financed competition, would soon find themselves without students to teach. Although a century old, this analysis is well worth reading for the depth of historical perspective it provides on one of the most important issues facing American culture today.Product details
